John Sabo

John Sabo, 81, of Donora, passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Feb. 3, 1926 in Donora, the son of the late John and Helen Havrilla Sabo. John was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Donora, the American Rusin Political and Beneficial Club of Donora, and the Donora Fire Department, serving for over 50 years and as a past fire chief. John also was sworn in as a special deputy sheriff for many years. He was retired as a wireman from U.S. Steel, Irvin Works, with over 40 years of service. John was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a seaman first class and was awarded the European Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. In addition to his parents, his wife, Olga Tunon Sabo (March 31, 1992); and two sisters, Mary Dudro and Dorothy Schwab, all preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Epstein and husband Sheldon, of Washington, Pa.; a son, John "Jack" Sabo and wife Ann, of South Carolina; two grandchildren, John Joseph Sabo and Mary Joelle Epstein; a sister, Margaret Swayne, of Castle Shannon; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the PAUL MACIK FUNERAL HOME, 546 Thompson Ave., Donora (724-379-7000), on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Blessing Service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Donora, with the Rev. Stephen J. Wahal as celebrant. Interment will follow St. Michael Cemetery, Donora. On Monday in the funeral home, a Parastas Service will be held at 2:30 p.m., followed by a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and Donora Fire Department services at 7:30 p.m.
